Cheap Thrills

2011.06.16

Thrill Jockey is a label that just can’t seem to put out anything that isn’t jaw-droppingly awesome lately. They just signed the Wooden Shjips and have been scooping up many of the most primo freaks currently making the scene. See Daniel Higgs, Zomes, Mountains, Sidi Toure and honestly too many others mention in one sitting. Get a little taste of White Hills having a rather Amphetamine Reptile moment below from their latest offering Hp-1 (they’ll be in Seattle September 9th at Nectar). And don’t miss the swirling majesty of Eternal Tapestry’s collaboration with Sun Araw entitled Night Gallery.

Local bastions of heavy (mostly)instrumental mind-movies Kinski will be making a rare appearance at the relatively intimate environs of the Funhouse this Friday. Joining them will be the Eternal Tapestry from Portland who are kind enough to bring along their heavy sisters Purple Rhinestone Eagle (to fill in for Backward Masks who can’t make it due to cat-fish related noodling injury). Visuals will be provided by the Portable Shrines Light Show Society.

Read what Dave Segal at the Stranger had to say about it here.

cassette culture

art by Brian Lightbody in Mixtape: the Art of Cassette Culture

The past few years have seen a resurgence of that antiquated and beloved media format, the cassette tape. This return to cassette is in part due to the zeitgeist of nostalgia that runs rampant in our culture and recycles hip about every 20 years or so. Many folks have been picking up on this return: designboom has a nice article about the art and culture of the cassette, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth edited Mix Tape: the Art of Cassette Culture in 2005. The November 08 Wire magazine contained a few articles about cassettes, notably about the mystique of Les Rallizes Dénudés cassettes and another on Black Metal’s cassette rituals. While preparing this post Portable Shrines synchronously stumbled into Flying Squirrel Pizza in Seattle, a pizza joint that loves mix tapes. So much in fact that they have created “The Flying Squirrel Pizza Mix Tape Challenge”…plus their pizza rocks.

The time is again now for those lovely little objects.

Also, in this resurgence something more is brewing, bands such as Wooden Shjips, Eternal Tapestry, and Du Hexen Hase are utilizing the cassette as a means of putting out new music. Labels are doing the same…Amateur Depression out of Florida is putting out some great stuff (Menthols and Nerve City among others). Anaheim based Burger Records is releasing kick ass albums on vinyl, cd and cassette tape and Best Kept Secret is an all tape label based out of Italy. I personally love having new releases in the format, there is something to the nostalgia…being able to pop a tape of something you have never heard before in your car stereo and just go…

So, having noticed this trend for a while I presented a couple of questions to some of these folks, asking what their reason were for using this format versus compact discs and if they thought this format will stick around as long as vinyl will… Read more…

The Portable Shrines collective was blessed to witness Ya Ho Wha 13′s performance at the Nectar Lounge in Seattle 12.15.08, Emeralds opening, and at the Doug Fir Lounge 12.16.08, Eternal Tapestry bringing forth Spirit first. The trio also played at Slim’s down in SF 12.18.08, with the Holy Wooden Shjips opening, and in LA 12.19.08 at the fitting Spaceland with the Moon Upstairs and the drone duo Robedoor setting the mood. There have been no reports of the two cali shows, and we are anxiously awaiting accounts from our southern brothers and sisters. Portable Shrines deeply wanted to follow Ya Ho Wha 13 down the coast but alas, the maya swallowed us and we need to make a living. If only the Source Family could take us into the fold and put us to work at the restaurant, but sadly those days are over.

Opening with the Star Exercise and following through with a hypnotic set Ya Ho Wha 13 held rapt the audience that came to check them out. There seemed to be a strange effect on women, both shows attended had seductively dancing ladies at the front of the stage…the charismatic spirit of Father Yod was present and effecting all. At the Seattle show this member of Portable Shrines had a moment of entrancement focused upon the crash cymbal of Octavius Aquarian, truly mind blowing. Before the Seattle gig the trio became lost on the streets and missed sound check, and the sound did seem a bit uneven. Nevertheless the show was rapturous. The Portland show was just as amazing, the sound richer at the Doug Fir with the more organic setting and a better mix. The band seemed more relaxed and flowed with the jams a bit more, bringing the attending collective again into a meditative state.

We suggest you to listen to Yahowa 13: Penetration: An Aquarian Symphony at the Anthology Records site. And please check out the book and video about the Source Family and Father Yod.

Shew.

Beaming out misty shrouds of sonic ooze with the best of ‘em Portland’s Eternal Tapestry lay down the law of the psychedelic wasteland. Drone done right, they stand as an eerie green beacon in a sea of garbage. Get their Mystic Induction LP on Notnotfun if you still can. Go see em’ w/ Ya Ho Wha 13 (see below) at the Doug Fir in Portland Dec. 16th
