What I found most interesting about this is why he went to Columbia with the hopes of doing Ayahusca when he could have gone to say Peru, where there are plenty of places that specialize in psychedelic tourism. He could have avoided the whole risking his life thing, but I suppose it wouldn’t have been as good a story. The National Geographic article he’s referring to is here:

His whole story was really based on the coincidence of it all-he ended up in Columbia through a series of connections he had stumbled upon by chance (or was it, right?). Coincidence, moreover the fact that there is a bigger plan and there is no coincidence, is BIG in the Pinchbeckian universe. I agree though, I too was surprised by Columbia as well-Peru is definitely the place for psych tourism.
